In the next several series of articles I will attempt to provide a general overview of each of the Ruger Single Action revolvers made from 1953 through 1972. Pk ripper frame serial number. Eagan driving test course map. I am confused. I saw a thread on the 'other Ruger forum' where someone had a 1957 Single-Six for sale, and wanted over $1,000 for it. The seller reduced the price a bit, and it appears someone bought it for $1,000. It had a round gate. Stasis for mac. It was not in mint condition, but looked pretty nice. From 339389 to 340086 there were about 700 made with XR3RED grip frames, and after that they were marked 'Ruger.22 Cal. And they were darn few. Most of the late numbers were of the convertibles, beginning in late 1962. The Coming of the Single-Six. Designed in 1953, the Single-Six was Ruger's first revolver, following the initial success in 1949 of Bill Ruger's Mark I semi-auto.22LR pistol. In the decade of the '50s, Westerns were all the rage both in the theater and on the new fangled television.

Location: Erie Pa Selling for a friend. Ruger old model Single Six, .22 caliber, believe to be 1960, Serial# 15138*. Some bluing wear, but not shot a lot. Unconverted. No box or papers. Have more pics and can get more info if needed.
Asking $375, shipped. Will meet at a local ffl. Open to offers if that's too high.

Location: Lake Lure NC USA If that gun has 6 digits starting with 451 in the serial number, it was made in 1966, not 1956. Typo maybe? If it's a 5 digit, it is 1956.

That said, it's a neat old gun at a not-bad price, even if it's not 100% 'correct' to a collector. Looks good to me.

Location: Lake Lure NC USA Good eyes y'all. That has to be an earlier XR-3 grip frame & grips. My first post was about the serial number, and I figured Racer9 would correct me with it being a 5 digit gun. 
Now that I look closer, that trigger may be too 'thick' for an early gun, so maybe somebody swapped around just the g/f & grips? 
Racer9, do not despair, as we see a lot of oddities like this.

OK, I got more info. It is a late 1960, serial# 15138* Unconverted.

In 1960, the serial number range started at 151189 & went to 171402. So, an earlier 1960 gun. The grip frame should be an XR-3 as shown. So I'd say the gun has all the correct parts as shipped from the factory.

Location: Western Mass My LGS received a Roger Old Model Single Six, pretty good shape, both cylinders, no box or anything else. He is trying to figure out a fair asking price.
I am thinking about offering $500. Would this be fair?
I know it's difficult to establish a fair value over the internet without pictures or anything much more than I have brought to the table but this is all I have right now. I am going to go back tomorrow and look at it again.
Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can offer.
added: Serial number is (IIRC) 142xxx.

Location: Ohio , U.S.A. welcome to the Forum, as Mike stated above, need to know 'more' as there is a BIG difference in values of regular, OMs and some scarce versions, as well as overall condition..you user name caught me, as one of my best friends was 'F Price' and we lost Fred a couple of years ago, retired Vietnam Navy veteran, U.S.Navy Seabee, and all around GREAT guy, miss him sitting around my table after all these years, right up there, as the time Carlos Hathcock sat at my tables during the OGCA back in the early 90s, we miss 'Gunny', as well as Fred, and ALL the others who served our country thanks for 'reminding' me of him first thing this morning......

As noted, condition is paramount, as are certain features. 
First, if it is a 6 digit gun, with 142xxx as the serial number, it was produced PRIOR to the addition of magnum cylinders. At around the 150000 serial number the barrels were changed to accommodate the 22 mag ammo. There is a slight difference. 
Look at the face of the magnum cylinder for scratched in 3 digits of the serial, the last 3 digits. They will likely NOT match your gun.
Different barrel lengths do affect the value as well. Most common are the 5-1/2' & the 6-1/2'.
From your description, I'd say no more than $400 for the gun.
With a serial number of 142xxx it was made in 1959.

Location: Ohio , U.S.A. what Ty has 'added', must remember the .22 magnum did not come out till 1959, so a 'convertible' would have been later......more info needed....as a serial number in the 142,xxx range would be a .222 ' nom. bore, NOT the larger, magnum .224 ' nom.....check again

Location: Western Mass I did examine both cylinders to see if one matched the markings normally seen on a magnum cylinder. One cylinder did appear to have an 'M' crudely scratched on the front face, nothing else. The rear face was flat. I note this because the rear face on the other cylinder was recessed about 1/8' with a narrow wall around the circumference of the cylinder. I'll try to take my camera tomorrow to take some pictures. I will also bring a .22 Magnum round to see if it fits in one of the cylinders (while safely removed from the revolver of course).
This is becoming quite the project, trying to figure out exactly what we have there.

Location: Ohio , U.S.A. the 'notch' ( ring around the rear end) is a firing pin 'groove, and the magnum old model cylinders will be 'flat', no 'notch' ( groove), and will have 'flutes' and if you look up into the chamber from the back end, you will 'see' a 'ring' far up, into the chamber, this 'ring' signifies it is a 'magnum'. proof in the pudding is the actual fit of a shell, (magnum) into the chamber..yes , side by side , you can 'see' a difference in the diameter of a 22 cal, versus the 'magnum'.....often yuo can find a 'spare' cylinder marked in some odd configurations, an 'S', or an 'X' , yes, seen an 'm'..not sure if that is the builder?? inspector? whomever.......most of the time, there is either nothing on BOTH or maybe ONE , and should be the 'last 3 digits' its when these numbers are NOT any of the serial number of that particular gun, then it most likely was 'added'..I would be MORE concerned with the serial number of the gun, and if it is really built for thhe 'magnum' also, as noted above, AFTER serial number #150,000......and the early 'magnum marked' guns, in the #300,000 range and these frames are marked 'magnum'.......so an 'early' single six, 5 1/2 inch barrel with a .222 diameter bore, made for the 22 caliber, shorts, longs, long rifle.....

Location: Western Mass Okay, went back, checked it out more closely, and now have a pic and some updated info.
First off, I did not (IIRC), the serial number was 184xxx. All I can say was that it was a long day and I had just came off the turnpike after a long drive, partly through heavy rain.
The magnum cylinder (I did check it with a round) came in it's own box. I think it's safe to assume that it was an after-market purchase.

Location: Ohio , U.S.A. Nice gun, nice picture too..yes a 1961 vintage so is properly configured..again, that price is 'top dollar' but its in a shop, and they have a business to run...$450 'out the door' would be MORE fair. 
IF it was still in the original box, shipper, etc, then $500 would be a good.fair price. 
I got one here, new as can be, box ,shipper and all, and I would not sell it for $500...

With the later serial number, it is correct in the offering of the extra cylinder. And Ruger shipped them in the red felt bag, stuck inside that correct brown box shown. 
All in all, a nice package, that looks correct. Of course, if it had the original box & all,! 
As shown, I agree with Dan about the $450 range.

Location: PAHRUMP, NV If it can be documented that it shipped with both cylinders, It would be a scarce and well worth $500.00. I have one in the 185XXX range and it has the black rubber grips and one cylinder. I wouldn't sell it for $500.00, but that is just my opinion. The XR-3 grip frame guns in good shape are getting harder to come by.

The RSS5X with XR3 grip frame is a scarce gun, and in the condition that it looks to be..well worth the $500.
In that sn range, I would bet it did leave as an RSS5X, especially since it has walnut grips.
